Anambra state, with the capital city Awka, is one of the five states that makes up the southeast region of Nigeria. They popularly refer to it as the commercial state of the southeast. But in recent times, the peace of the inhabitants has been disrupted as there has being several reports of violence brewing in different parts of the state because of the gubernatorial elections scheduled for the 6th of November 2021. The security agencies in the state have had several face offs with members of a group called IPOB, over the last few months.
Why it matters?
IPOB, Indigenous People of Biafra, have said there will be no election in the state as the push for the five Igbo states to be separated from Nigeria continues. This agitation by IPOB has faced stern criticism from the Federal Government and other political figures.
The big picture
IPOB seems like they mean business and have declared a sit at home from the 5th to 10th of November 2021. This means that there will be no movement in Anambra state before, during and after the period of the election. This is to sabotage the gubernatorial elections on the 6th of November 2021. What’s more? The federal Government has deployed several security agencies to the state to protect the voters and to resist the members of IPOB who pose a threat to the election. Regardless, there is still panic among the people of Anambra as it catches them in the middle of these happenings.
Conclusion
The way to restore the peace Anambra has enjoyed over the last years is still unknown, but the world watches on to see how these would unfold.
