The Governors of the states in Nigeria are backing the Federal Government plan to introduce transport palliative to help poor Nigerians. They agree that if the fuel subsidy situation goes on, there would be little revenue to pay salaries of civil servants.
Why it matters?
Several weeks ago, the Federal Government through the Finance Minister, Zainab Ahmed, said to tackle the fuel subsidy regime, the FG would introduce a transportation palliative to the lowest class citizens of Nigeria.
The Governors across the 36 states backed the initiative and has agreed to pay N5000 support. The Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai said this on Tuesday while speaking at the World Banks’ November 2021 Nigeria Development Update report in Abuja.
He said, “This is why the Nigerian Governors’ Forum met and agreed to support the Federal Government’s social compact. Withdraw this subsidy by February, use the N250bn per month that would have been lost between February and May to do this conditional cash transfer that would put money in the pockets of Nigerians and alleviate not only the cost of transportation but the 2-3 per cent job inflation that is expected when the subsidy is eliminated. We cannot sustain it. We cannot continue with it.
