Lawmakers of the combined Houses have, on Wednesday, 19th January 2022, included both direct and indirect clauses into the electoral bill as the means for conducting primary elections.
Why it matters?
In the initial Electoral Act of 2010, the law stated the indirect clause as the means for conducting primary elections by political parties. But the challenge of this Act by the National Assembly has seen an objection from the state governors and a blunt disapproval by President Buhari.
Reports say that both the House of Assembly and House of Representatives have resolved to include the direct and indirect primaries into the electoral bill. This means that the law is granting political parties the power to choose their means of conducting primary elections.
