A bill sponsored by Senator Suleiman Kwari to allow the Federal Government to acquire assets from public officers, terrorism financiers, etc passes second reading.

Having passed first reading on March 16, 2021 and with President Muhammadu Buhari particularly supporting the bill, the Senate is considering a proposal for the Federal Government to gain assets illegally got from unlawful activities. The lead debater, Senator Suleiman Kwari, said this bill would ensure the proper management of seized assets. 

Supporting the motion, Senator Smart Adeyemi said that it has become very important for the government to engage individuals with illegal sources of property acquisition. The Deputy Majority Whip, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi, echoed a caution stressing the need for the lawmakers not to equip the wrong person with the right weapon. Meanwhile, Senator Stella Oduah, who is being investigated by the EFCC, kicked against the bill.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, handed the bill over to the Joint Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes; and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to revert in 4 weeks.
