The crash of the portal of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has entered the sixth day, resulting in the loss of millions of naira by telecommunications companies, banks, immigration amongst others. The commission said in a statement that the downtime is because of ongoing maintenance.

Why it matters?
As directed by the Federal Government, the National Identity Management Commission has been linking National Identity Number (NIN) to old and new SIM cards. Also, the Nigerian Immigration Service, banks and other institutions have incorporated the use of the commission portal to verify their customers’ NIN before attending to them. Because of the downtime, these companies have suffered restricted activities.

According to sources in both MTN and GLO, they said operations over the last couple of days have been slow. The reports say that the affected institutions face frustration from customers daily. Talks are ongoing between NIMC, telecoms and other officials to determine alternatives.
