At a plenary session on Thursday, the House of Representatives through the Ministry of Women Affairs and the National Orientation Agency are looking to sensitize the public against female genital mutilation.
The Big Picture.
Leading the motion, Ganiyu Johnson moved that the lawmakers commemorate the 2022 International Day of Female Genital Mutilation. He reminded the house that in 2003, the United Nations set aside February 6th as the International Day for the Eradication of Female Genital Mutilation.
Ganiyu Johnson further explained that the awareness would condemn any form of injuring, altering, or violation of a female’s body for non-medical reasons according to international rights of girls and women.
Disturbing discovery by the house revealed that not only is Nigeria ranked as the third country with the highest number of female genital mutilation, about 20percent of women between ages 15 and 49 have suffered from female genital mutilation.
