21 Storey Building Collapse in Ikoyi, Lagos State

Following the collapse of a 21 Storey building under construction, located on Gerard Road, Ikoyi around 3 pm on Monday, November 1, over 45 victims were said to be trapped in the rubble. In recent news, 22 bodies have been recovered and 9 victims with some injuries rescued from the collapsed building as the search continues to recover more victims. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited the site of the tragedy this afternoon and encouraged all federal and state agencies involved in rescue operations. He further assured that anyone indicted in the Ikoyi building collapse will be prosecuted and there will be no cover-up in the search for the truth.

WHY IT MATTERS

The General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency reported that the approval for the collapsed building was fifteen (15) and not 21 floors. He admitted that poor materials were used in the construction of the building, hence its collapse. Properly prosecuting everyone involved will help ensure that there will be less or no recurrence of such tragedy.
