The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr Timipre Sylva.

Reports from different parts of the country say that consumers of adulterated fuel are arresting filling station owners and station attendants over the sale of adulterated fuel.

Why it matters?
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited released imported fuel from a source supplier in Europe with an increased level of methanol to the public. This imported fuel was beyond Nigeria specifications and was withdrawn from depots after the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) discovered the adulteration. The Federal Government further imported 300 million liters of fuel to close the fuel scarcity situation which was developing.

Consumers of petrol had bought adulterated fuel, which consequently caused damage to cars and engines. In return, consumers are suing filing station owners and attendants for the damage caused to their cars and engines. Speaking on Wednesday, president of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, Billy Gillis-Harry confirmed the attacks on filing stations to newsmen. Reports claim that if these depots don’t handle the pressure well, filing stations might take the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to court.
