Moussa Faki Mahamat, chair of the African Union Commission, on Monday announced the suspension of Burkina Faso from the union following the recent coup in the nation.
The Big Picture.
Following the overthrow of President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, the African Union, alongside the West African Bloc ECOWAS, condemned the actions of the rebelling group. In the statement released on Twitter, the 15-member Peace and Security Council stated that the union voted to suspend Burkina Faso from any AU activities until the country regains constitutional order.
Burkina Faso which gained independence from France in 1960 has also been suspended by ECOWAS last Friday. The country is the third country in 18 months to see a coup break out in West Africa after Mali and Guinea.
