Former US President Donald Trump has, for the third time, launched a presidential bid for 2024 on Tuesday evening at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Donald Trump has become the first candidate to vocalize his presidential ambition two film years before Election Day. And with hopes of winning the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, Mr. Trump promises to make America “great and glorious again”.

What they are saying
Political analysts have claimed that Trump’s intent for launching a presidential bid this early is to scare off those possibly nursing presidential ambition under the Republican Party, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and Trump’s former vice president, Mike Pence.

  • Trump’s address accused US President Joe Biden of “destroying the economy, leading us to the brink of nuclear war, erasing the southern border,” etc.

State of play
Eight years ago, Donald Trump came on to the US political scene with a clean record, but years later his political record has been stained with two impeachment, accusations of tax cuts, inciting violence on the US Capitol, amongst others. Critics also point to the mishandling of the Covid pandemic and the inability to repeal the opposition’s healthcare reforms during his four-year tenure. Donald Trump also has obstacles such as the threat of a tougher counterpart arising from the party.

  • This trail of incidents poses a significant threat to the former President’s ambition.
