There is a cold war that the election season ignites between political parties. Nigeria’s forthcoming 2023 general elections are no different. In the past, this war of words has been between the ruling party and the opposition. But in the current election season, this has become a three-way streak between Nigeria’s ruling party, the All-Progressive Congress (APC), opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and third force, the Labour Party.
While political faithfuls in the different camps are openly declaring support for their candidates, the presidential candidates are on their end, forming cross party affiliations to ensure success in the forthcoming elections.
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the former Lagos State governor and presidential candidate of Nigeria’s ruling party, APC has, over the last weeks, consulted stakeholders in Nigeria’s political space. From the former president Olusegun Obasanjo to Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the presidential candidate is not leaving any stones unturned in the buildup to the 2023 elections.
This has sparked a reaction from the opposition party as they fear an endorsement from the former president would further ease the APC’s candidate presidential run.
What’s happening
The PDP spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, in a statement reprimanded the presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Tinubu for visiting the former President Goodluck Jonathan.
He further recalled how the APC presidential candidate on several occasions lied and attacked President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration just to smear his presidency.
In response to the PDP’s comment, the APC spokesman, Felix Morka, released a statement mocking the “panic state” of the PDP. The party’s spokesman further expressed displeasure over the years which the PDP ruled Nigeria, calling it “16 years of misrule, corruption and squandermania.”
