The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) has published the list of preliminary registered voters for the 2023 general elections. The list of voters is now accessible to voters at the polling units all over the country, and on the electoral body’s official website. The exercise would run from Saturday 12th November to Friday 18th November, 2022.
What they are saying
The notice of publication read that INEC was displaying its register to the public to enable them to confirm their details, and report persons ineligible to vote in the forthcoming elections, as in a case of death.
Why it matters
Several images that went viral since the publication of INEC’s register showed a series of individuals who were unfit to be in the register. While the pictures of some of these suspicious persons were underage, others had repeated picture photographs with different names and locations attached to them.
- The volume of these suspicious persons in INEC’s register has raised questions about the integrity of the electoral body.
What you should know
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Wednesday announced that 93.5 million Nigerians were registered to vote in the 2023 general elections. The figure totals the 12.29 million Nigerians who completed the suspended Continuous Voter Registration exercise (CVR) and the 84,004,084 voters already in the existing register.
Elections should hold elections in 176,846 polling units in the 774 local government areas of the country, disregarding the regions submerged by flood.
