The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi and the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have recently received criticism for visiting Nigerians in the diaspora and the diplomatic representatives of other countries urging election season.

Many believe that with less than three months to the presidential elections, presidential candidates should focus their efforts on locals rather than the international communities. These events have led to the question of the significance of the international trips in campaign season?

  • Nigerians in the diaspora

Undoubtedly, Nigerians cannot underplay the involvement and contributions of citizens living in other parts of the world in nation building through fundings and professional knowledge transfer. By engaging this sect, the presidential candidates are looking to build trust and belief in the government he promises. The earned trust of these international citizens can further prompt them to donate cash to the candidates’ campaign and mobilize support in their respective circle of influence.

  • International organizations

A presentation of one’s political agenda to an international body can, on one hand, boost the candidate’s recognition while establishing a cordial relationship on the other. Also, candidates could receive endorsements from these international organizations, which then affects the voting choices of their circle of influence.

The big picture
There is no handbook to winning elections. As such, candidates must engage in consultations in and across the border to ensure victory. In all, candidates must politically position their campaign strategies to reach Nigerians home and abroad.
