Electricity workers in Nigeria are threatening to go on strike to protest welfare issues and to kick against promotional interviews. The government, according to National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) members, is not doing enough to address staff welfare concerns.
Early on Tuesday, the workers gathered at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) headquarters in Abuja. The group announced that its members would stop working on Wednesday. The strike will undoubtedly make Nigeria’s electrical issues worse. The NUEE advised its members to abide by the order and halt working as of August 17th in a notice that was signed by the general secretary, Joe Ajaero. The union gave the employer a 14-day deadline to meet their demands or they’ll stop work.
The group also expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s refusal to pay former employees of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) their dues in December 2019.

Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has urged power workers to postpone their planned protest over “staff welfare”. In a letter sent to the employees yesterday, TCN managing director Sule Abdulaziz made the request.
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) had told its members to picket TCN’s offices yesterday, following which a strike action will start today.
