The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Fredric Oladeinde, has announced that the state government is extending the ban on commercial motorcycles to four more Local Council Development Areas from September 1st 2022.
The areas include Kosofe, Ikosi-Isheri, Oshodi-Isolo, Mushin, and the respective LCDAs in the areas. These efforts by the Lagos State government are to reduce crimes rates and accidents recorded in Lagos State, Nigeria’s largest commercial city.
Quick catch-up
The Lagos state government, in conjunction with the Lagos state police command, banned commercial motorcycles in six local governments and nine local council development areas of the state. The Sanwo-Olu administration reinstated the ban following the outrage that ensued from the killing of a young man named David by alleged commercial motorcyclists.
- The six local government areas affected by the ban include Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa.
Why it matters
Both federal and state governments are frowning at the operations of commercial motorcycles in the country following investigations that the activities of motorcyclist links to insecurity/crime rate in the country. While the federal government is yet to pass an order regarding the means of transportation, both Lagos and Zamfara state governments are already placing restrictions on motorcycles.
- The Lagos state government disclosed that the ban on motorcycles in six local government areas dropped both crime rates and accident rates by 86% and 63.7%, respectively.
- The ban has proven helpful in maintaining peace and order in Nigeria’s largest commercial city. But on the other hand, more residents are losing their source of livelihood.
