Elon Musk, the multi-billionaire and owner of Twitter, has on Tuesday declared that the social media platform has added 1.6 million daily active users in the last week, setting an all-time record. According to the Tesla boss, this will improve as Twitter becomes “fast to use outside of North America, Western Europe & Japan.” This is in the face of the harshest critics.

The chart released by Elon Musk shows that Twitter’s average weekly users rose from 257.8 million in the week ended November 13 to 259.4 million in the week ended November 20, 2022, showing a 1.6 million growth.

Why it matters
Elon Musk has faced massive criticism for his style of leadership since his complete takeover of the platform in late October. Observers and even former staff predicted the app to crash after many employees left the social media company following Elon Musk’s proposal for employees to pledge to long hours or leave with three months’ severance pay.

The big picture
Twitter is undergoing a complete revamp under the leadership of Elon Musk. This means that there would be a lot of changes and disruption of the way the application works over a period before it becomes stable. Elon Musk has already laid over staff, unbanned controversial figures including Donald Trump, Jordan Peterson, and put on hold the planned relaunch of Twitter Blue

  • Experts believe the curiosity in the changes coming to the platform is driving the daily active users of the platform.
