In his address to the 77th UN General Assembly in New York, Senegal’s President Macky Sall called for the easing of sanctions against Zimbabwe.

The United States (US) and the European Union (EU) continue sanctions against Zimbabwe, alleging a lack of progress in democracy and human rights reforms, as well as press freedom restriction
Individuals and corporations, including President Emmerson Mnangagwa, are targeted by the sanctions.
The effects
The current African Union head, Senegalese President Macky Sall, said the sanctions against Zimbabwe were exacerbating the people’s misery.
Zimbabwe’s economy has experienced serious economic problems, including spells of hyperinflation, in recent years, but there is no evidence that sanctions are to blame.
Looking forward
President Sall was the first African leader to speak at the United Nations General Assembly at this summit. He encouraged the Security Council to deal with African crises in the same way it dealt with other conflicts, urged for inclusive council reforms and maybe offer Africa a permanent seat.
Mr. Sall also demanded that Africa be included in the G20 club, which includes the presidents of the world’s 20 largest countries.
